Military Medal

'For magnificent gallantry as a Company Stretcher Bearer this man performed most magnificent work on the morning of the 22nd near Warneton and by his gallant conduct showed himself possessed of exceptional courage. On the morning in question when a working party from this Battalion to which Pte Crawford was attached was withdrawing from the front line, a section of the 1st Machine gun Company was being very heavily shelled and one gun position with crew had been practically destroyed, Pte Crawford and Pte Moore came to the assistance of two machine gunners who were endeavouring to extricate the buried and wounded men, and working all the time under exceptionally severe shell fire were able to get out those members of the team who were still alive. No praise is too high for this man?s work. He worked without thought of his own safety and undoubtedly assisted in saving the lives of the wounded. It is impossible to distinguish between his work and that of Pte Moore and my recommendation for this honour to these two men is urged most strongly.'
