War service: Western Front Embarked Dunedin, 21 August 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 25 October 1916, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 15 November 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 4 December 1916, and posted to 10th Company. Found guilty, 29 January 1917, of being absent from parade: awarded 3 days' Field Punishment No 2. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 15 February 1917 (scabies); rejoined Bn, 23 February 1917. Wounded in action, 5 August 1917 (gun shot wound, left hand), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train, 6 August 1917, and admitted to No 1 Australian General Hospital, Rouen, 7 August 1917; transferred to No 2 Convalescent Depot, 11 August 1917. Admitted to No 2 General Hospital, Rouen, 25 August 1917 (onychia: inflamed connective tissue, heel); discharged to Base Depot, Etaples, 27 September 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 8 October 1917.
