'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed great skill and fine leadership when in charge of his platoon during our offensive, reorganising and maintaining direction under difficult circumstances. Although wounded in the eye and suffering great pain, he remained on duty until the situation was secure and consolidation well advanced, finally collapsing from pain and exhaustion.
