Proceeded overseas to France, 5 September 1917; marched into NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 9 September 1917; joined 3rd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, and posted to 14th Company, 8 October 1917. Reported missing in action, 12 October 1917; subsequently confirmed wounded in action, 12 October 1917 (contusions, back: severe), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 44th Casualty Clearing Station; to 13th General Hospital, Wimereux, 14 October 1917; to England, 19 October 1917, and admitted same day to Tooting Military Hospital, London; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 10 November 1917. Classified 'Unfit' by Medical Board, 23 May 1918 (date unclear), and placed on NZ Roll Found guilty, 21 June 1918, NZ Discharge Depot, Torquay, of smoking in bedroom: awarded 7 days' confined to barracks and forfeited 3 days' pay.
