'Operations on Welsh and Bon Avis ridges - 28th September to 1st October 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This N.C.O., when his Platoon was held up by hostile Machine Gun fire, brought his Lewis Gun into action with great skill and by clever manoeuvring silenced the enemy Machine Gun and killed its crew. He kept touch with flank Company under very difficult conditions, the advance being made in the darkness. Thtroughout the whole operations he set a splendid example to the men of his Platoon, of courage and determination.'
