War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 5 February 1916; disembarked Suez, 13 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 7 April 1916. Wounded in action, 15 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left thigh), and admitted to 1/3 Northumbrian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 1/1 South Midlands Division Casualty Clearing Station; to 25th General Hospital, Hardelot, 17 September 1916; to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 6 October 1916; rejoined unit, in the field, 12 October 1916. Nominated for a Commission in the NZ Expeditionary Force; marched out to OTC for training, 18 April 1917. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant, 11 June 1917, and marched into NZ Reserve Group, Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 June 1917; joined 4th Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 8 July 1917, and posted to A Company. Detached to General Course, 13 July 1917; rejoined unit, 10 August 1917. Detached to Brigade Platoon Course, 19 September 1917; rejoined unit, 27 September 1917. Killed in action, 12 October 1917.
