Joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, Reserve Camp, 7 March 1916, and posted to 10th Company.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 9 April 1916.

Wounded in action, 6 July 1916 (gun shot wound, back), and admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, and transferred to 30th General Hospital, Calais; to No 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 12 July 1916; to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 14 July 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 7 August 1916.

Wounded in action (second occasion), 15 September 1916 (gun shot wound, right thigh), and admitted to XVth Corps Collecting Station, and transferred to 8th Casualty Clearing Station; to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 16 September 1916; discharged to Base Details, 30 September 1916; marched into NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 1 October 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 18 October 1916.

Wounded in action (third occasion), 21 October 1916 (strained back), and admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance; rejoined Bn, 18 November 1916 (and reported 'not wounded').
