Military Medal 'East of Ypres on the 4th of October 1917 this NCO displayed the utmost courage and good leadership. When all the Senior NCOs had been killed or wounded he took command of his platoon and leading them through heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, captured two machine-guns and killed their crews. Throughout the engagement his extraordinary bravery and devotion to duty were a magnificent example and incentive to his men.'
