Military Medal 'Action in front of Belle Vue Spur, West of Passchendaele, 12th October 1917 and following days. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the morning of 12th October 1917 Private Chandler was in charge of a Lewis gun team in the attack on the Belle Vue Spur, and displayed great gallantry and leadership in getting his team forward into effective fire positions. Despite heavy casualties in his Section he kept his gun firing whenever there was an opportunity to do damage to the enemy. By his courage, resourcefulness and devotion to duty, he not only set a splendid example to his comrades, but lent reliable assistance in the general conduct of the attack. The heavy machine-gun fire and sniping did not deter him in carrying on his dangerous duties.'
