On the first occasion he took command of a Headquarters section and lead them under heavy fire to a threatened corner of Biefvillers Village. This
section helped considerably in beating back an enemy local counter attack. On the second occasion he saw a wounded man on a crest being barraged by the enemy
artillery He rushed across with shells bursting all round and dragged the man to safety.'

This NCO was in command of certain sniping and observation posts in the line on 28th November 1917, and in the course of a heavy bombardment he was buried by a shell while visiting one of his posts. On being extricated, although partially stunned, he refused to leave the trenches, but continued on his rounds. At one of the Observation Posts he dug out a wounded man, and saved a quantity of snipers' material. He stuck to his post until the Battalion was relieved, and through his skill and efficiency 20 Germans were accounted for by the men under his command.'
