'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his men in an advance of over 11/2 miles in perfect order after a long march. He went to the assistance of a company which had suffered many casualties, reorganised it and helped to maintain the position for two days under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. His courageous bearing had a splendid effect on the men.'
