Military Medal 'For great gallantry and devotion to duty from September 15th to September 1916, at Thistle Alley aid post he repeatedly led hid bearer squad through heavy shellfire thus setting a fine example of courage and coolness under fire to the other men.'
Source: 'London Gazette' Date: Bar to Military Medal 'For great gallantry and fine leadership, Near Gravenstafel on the 4th October shortly after the begining of the action, he had to assume command of his platoon owing to his Officer and platoon Sergeant being casualtied. He displayed brilliant courage and coolness, and his leadership was of the highest standard. In the establishment of a line on our exposed flank, he acted with great courage, and at a critical moment successfully railed his men when they hestitated under extremely heavy M.G. fire. His courage, determination and leadership cannot be too highly praised.'
