Bar to Military Medal 'Operations during Somme advance August-September 1918. On the afternoon of 4/9/18 Sergt Carr in charge of a patrol left our front line West of Vauxwood and patrolled through the wood in one direction. The wood at this time was subjected to intense high explosive and gas shell fire, but this NCO pushed on through it all regardless of personal safety. He patrolled to the village of Maricourt and sent back valuable information as to the position of the enemy and the division on our left. He then went through Hennois Wood and patrolled forward over open country towards the Canal Nord where he was subjected to heavy fire with the scantiest of cover. The enemy harassed them for over half and hour until opportunities came to make a dash for it. He brought back good info as to the disposition of the enemy. Through this information our own troops were advanced through Vauxwood. A fitting example to his men.'
