'Messines Offensive 7th to 9th June 1917. For coolness and devotion to duty. During the advance on Messines on the morning of the 7th June 1917 he displayed great coolness and courage, steadying and rallying his men, and single-handed, accounted for many of the enemy who offered resistance. While consolidating, the line was heavily shelled and Sergeant Cauty was conspicuous in going through the trenches cheering and steadying the men. He rendered invaluable service throughout, and set a splendid example for all ranks.'
