Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. early in the advance near Esnes on the 8th October 1918, Corporal Campbell, who was in command of a section, was bruised badly at the knee by the nose cap of an eney shell, but continued to lead his section and did not go back to the R.A.P. until he had reached his objective and the men were dug in. Throughout the advance he was particularly cool under heavy enemy shellfire, and his disregard of danger was an object lesson to the men under his command. When his Section reached uncut wire behind which were posted machine guns, Corporal Campbell boldly let his party over the wire and captured his portion of the enemy trench behind.'
