Military Medal 'East of Ypres on the 4th October 1917 this NCO displayed the very greatest courage and devotion to duty throughout the engagement. He led his men against the enemy's fortified post, and after engaging the enemy with bombs, he charged at the head of his men against the post. Even after being badly wounded he lay upon the ground and kept on urging his men to the attack until the post had been cleared and the enemy destroyed. His courage and extraordinary devotion to duty were a very fine example and incentive to his men.'
