War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 29 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 27 July 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 11 August 1916; joined 1st Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 24 August 1916. Wounded in action, 25 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left forearm); admitted to 1st Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 26 Sptember 1916; transferred to England, 28 September 1916, and admitted same day to 2nd London General Hospital. Transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 15 January 1917. Classified unfit by Medical Board, 13 February 1917, and placed on NZ Roll. Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board 'Maheno', 18 March 1917; discharged, 24 July 1917 (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action).
