'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Hebuterne on the 15th July 1918, his company was engaged in an attack on the front line. He led his men across "No Man?s Land" and under machine gun fire and bombs he worked them so that they were enabled to rush the guns. He saw his men engaged in mopping up and then followed up the retreating enemy personally accounting for several with his rifle. His example undoubtedly encouraged his men who are loud in their praise of their leader's fine work and personal bravery.'
