Bar to Distinguished Service Order

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He supervised the assembly of his battalion for an attack in a difficult position. When part of one of the companies was held up during the attack he at once went to the spot, and by skilful leadership enabled the advance to continue. The success of the operation was largely due to his courageous example, under intense machine gun fire, which was an inspiration to all ranks.'

Distinguished Service Order

'For gallantry and devotion to duty. This Officer has commanded his Battalion with great ability throughout. During the Messines operations he showed exceptional coolness and gallantry, and his example was a great incentive to his men. I cannot speak too highly of this Officer?s contempt of danger in the Field. His leadership has been exceptional.'

Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George

'For conspicuous, and consistent gallantry, and devotion to duty in the Field. This Officer successfully fought his Battalion through the very heavy fighting during the period from 17th September to 11th November 1918. At Crevecoeur in particular, from 29th September 1918 to 5th October 1918, it was due to his able leadership and coolness under fire, that his Battalion forced their way across the St Quentin Canal into the village of Crevecoeur, and in spite of heavy shelling and repeated counter attacks held on to same.'

Mentioned in Despatches

'British front, Armentieres, 7th May to 7th August 1916, and operations on Somme, 12th September to 2nd October 1916. Major S.S. Allen, as second in command of the 2nd Auckland Batt. has with the greatest zeal and ability since the formation of this Brigade. I look upon him as one of the most reliable officers I ever met, and of very sound judgement. He has twice temporarily commanded his battalion with marked success. During the last month he has acted as Brigade Liaison Officer to adjacent brigades, and on two occasions his information and action proved of the highest value. Although wounded in the head by a shell he still remained at his post.'
