'Operations during Somme advance August September 1918. On the afternoon of the 29 August 1918 information was wanted as to the position of the enemy in Combles. Sgt Brown's platoon was detailed for this work. On entering the village, the party came under very heavy enemy machine gun fire which scattered the men. Sgt Brown got the platoon together and under cover. He then voluntarily went forward to locate the enemy positions and succeeded in bringing back valuable information which allowed the artillery to deal with the position. By his cool and courageous manner and personal disregard of danger, he has on this and other occasions been a fitting example to the men.'
