'On the 8th October 1918 at Crevecoeurt during the advance of that date, Corporal Young with his gun, did splendid work by bringing heavy fire to bear across the front of the 2nd New Zealand Infantry Brigade on his right flank, thereby greatly minimising the losses incurred during the subsequent advance. Later in the day he lead his gun forward with great boldness, inflicting losses on parties of the enemy who were offering resistance. Previous to this on the 23rd August 1918 at Beauregard Dovecot he was with the advanced guns. During the day his Officer was severely wounded. With absolute disregard of his personal safety and with greatest devotion to duty this NCO crawled to a shell hole in which the Officer was lying and carried him on his back assisted by another man, (under intense machine gun and artillery fire coming from the direction of Miraumont) for a distance of over six hundred yards to a place of safety. During the whole of the period of this NCO's with his Company his coolness and courage when under heavy shell fire have always been a magnificent example to his men.'
