'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 23rd October 1918, in operations near Salesches, Private Winter accompanied his Sergeant on a very dangerous patrol, to locate hostile machine guns which were causing casualties. Two of the party of five were wounded and the Sergeant returned to give the information to his Company Commander. Private Winter remained and observed the enemy until they were put out of action. Throughout the day this man volunteered for any specially dangerous duty, thereby encouraging the men of his platoon and rendering very valuable service.'
