Proceeded overseas to France, 11 February 1917; taken on strength, 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 14 March 1917.

Relinquished temporary rank of Lance Corporal, 14 March 1917.

Wounded in action, 7 June 1917 (gun shot wound, right shoulder), and admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 8 June 1917; to England, 9 June 1917, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 3 July 1917; discharged to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 20 August 1917; marched in to 4th Reserve Bn, Sling, 11 October 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France; marched in to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 29 October 1917.
