War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 15 February 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 26 April 1917, and marched in to 3rd Trainin Bn, Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 26 May 1917; joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 9 June 1917. Wounded in action, 31 July 1917 (gun shot wounds, back, chest, abdomen [penetrating]), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to No 56 General Hospital, Etaples, 8 August 1917; transferred to England, 14 August 1917, and admitted same day to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames. Classified 'unfit' by NZ Medical Board, 12 September 1917, and placed on NZ Roll. Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board HT 'Willochra', 1 February 1918; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 15 April 1918.
