Taken on strength, 14th Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery, from Canterbury Mounted Rifles Regiment, 26 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, 7 April 1916. Wounded in action, 24 May 1916 (gun shot wound, right hand), and admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to NZ Divisional Rest Station, 27 May 1916; discharged to unit, 3 June 1916; rejoined unit, in the field, 4 June 1916. Posed to 12th Battery, 22 January 1917. Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 5 August 1917 (inflammation, middle ear); transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 10 August 1917; to 1st South African General Hospital, Abbeville, 11 August 1917; to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 8 September 1917. Classified 'C' by NZ Travelling Medical Board, 30 October 1917. Marched out to England, 10 November 1917. Classified 'Unfit' and placed on NZ Roll, London, 12 January 1918. Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board HT 'Willochra', 1 February 1918; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service), 16 April 1918.
