'This NCO, in an attack on 15th July on Rossignol Wood led a post to its objective and commanded it with marked ability. In the attack on Havrincourt Wood on September 4th he showed splendid personal leadership and set a fine example to his men. He has consistently since March acted as leader of night patrols in "No Man?s Land" and invariably carried out his task and made light of all difficulties.'
