Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Crevecouer on 5th October 1918. Rifleman Williams showed great dash and determination in an operation in which the Battalion was pushing two companies across the Canal de L'Escaut to
establish a bridgehead. He several times carried messages while exposed to heavy machine gun fire. While crossing open country on his way to a forward post, he was severely wounded in the leg. In spite of his wound he managed to get forward
and deliver his message; though he knew quite well that the post he was going to was in a critical and exposed position and that it would be exceedingly difficult to get him evacuated. His determination and bravery were an inspiration to all.'
