'Operations from 20th September 1916 to 26th February 1917. This officer has commanded the New Zealand Trench Mortar Batteries since their formation in April 1916. He has commanded them with conspicuous ability and success. The many minor operations which the Division has been engaged in during the period under review, the duty of clearing the wire has always depended on this officer. His invariable success in wire cutting by day and night, the complete superiority which his mortars have always established over those of the enemy, and the contempt of danger which he and those under him have always shown in carrying out their programme of fire regardless of the heaviest hostile retaliation, has earned for him the entire confidence of all areas of the Division. During the period under review he has fired more rounds than any other Trench Mortar Officer in the army, and probably more than any other in France. By demonstrating what they can accomplish when boldly and fearlessly handled, he has raised the Divisional Trench Mortars from the position of weapons to the position of indispensable ones. I particularly ask that he may be rewarded.'
