Military Medal 'For conspicuous ability and resource in the establishment of a Flank Post during the attack on Passchendaele Ridge on 12th October 1917. When the advance was held up, a Post was formed on the right flank of the Brigade Sector; before this Post could be properly organised and consolidated, all the officers of the Company were killed. Sergeant Whyte proceeded to collect stragglers and improve the
position, with unusual skill and resource. He showed commendable leadership throughout the whole operation and by his courage and cheerfulness set a splendid example to his men.'
