Meritorious Service Medal 'At Ypres on the night of the 25th/26th December, 1917, Gunner Whitfield was sharing a dugout with Gunner Munro of the same unit. At 10.30 pm the dugout was found to be on fire. Gunner Whitfield got out safely, but finding Gunner Munro was still inside, he rushed back into the dugout, which was by this time a blazing furnace and succeeded in rescuing his comrade. In this saving this man?s life at great
personal risk, he received severe burns on the face and head, necessitating his immediate evacuation to hospital.'
