'For conspicuous gallantry an devotion to duty. During our offensive he entered an enemy dug out and brought out eighteen prisoners. Later, he bombed an enemy sniper. He then led a party against a machine gun which was firing from a dressing station, captured the gun, and killed all the crew except one. One two further occasions on the same day he led patrols with great dash, and returned with excellent information. During our attack upon an enemy position, noticing that a trench in front was being held up by a machine gun, he rushed forward and bayoneted five of the crew and brought out the sixth with the gun, thus preventing casualties and greatly assisting our advance.'
