Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry in the field. On the 4th October during the attack east of St Julien this NCO was in charge of a Lewis gun and at great personal risk was the means of enabling one particular enemy strong point to be taken.
Subsequently his gun was placed out of action and he immediately led his section forward as Rifleman and with the bayonet accounted for considerable numbers of the enemy right up to the objective. He proved himself a very capable section commander possessed of initiative and courage. He was subsequently badly shell shocked and was sent back by his Company Commander. On his way down,
although very much shaken he searched for and found his gun and took it with him, thus enabling it to be used in subsequent operations. By his devotion to duty he set a splendid example to his men.'
