Proceeded overseas to France from Sling Camp, 20 August 1916; joined 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 4 September 1916. Attached to Royal Engineers, 17 October 1916; rejoined Bn, 18 February 1917. Reported wounded and believed died of wounds, 12 October 1917. Court of Enquiry, 3 November 1917, concluded: 'No further evidence. Killed in action, 12 October 1917.' Undated report by 2nd ANZAC Corps Burial Detachment: 'Buried in area comprised by a circle of radius 350 yds of which the centre is at Pillbox at D.9.d.85.95.28 NE 1'; grave subsequently lost.
