Mentioned in Despatches 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In front of Warneton on 31st July 1917 he showed great skill and judgment in handling the platoon which he
temporarily commanded when it was necessary to move forward under a heavy barrage. He possesses courage of a very high order which he has displayed on
several occasions. He has been through every action in which the Battalion has taken part, and has shown himself a fearless leader.'
Source: London Gazette Date: Military Medal 'For gallantry and initiative. During the attack of the New Zealand Division east of St Julien on October the 4th, Sergeant Watson commanded a platoon and showed marked ability as a leader. He led an assault on a strong point and captured 40 prisoners. Later he assisted to consolidate the Blue Line and successfully held his position on it against an enemy counter-attack.'
