Source: London Gazette Date: Mentioned in Despatches 'For gallantry and devotion to duty during period from July 14th to August 21st 1917 in operations at La Basse Ville and especially when in charge of the Advanced Dressing Station in Ploegsteert Wood. On August 12th the enemy heavily shelled the Dressing Station with gas and high velocity shells hitting the Station and killing four orderlies and wounding three others and burying the equipment. This Officer by his coolness and utter disregard for his personal safety rallied the men and by
the splendid example he set the men was able to get the wounded and personnel away in safety without further casualties. He then with four orderlies, who volunteered to stay reorganised the dressing station and in spite of the heavy fire
directed on the station continued to attend to the wounded who were being brought in from the surrounding area.'
