'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Auchonvillers on the Ancre on the morning of 26th March 1918, Rifleman Wake's Company formed the screen while the Battalion was establishing an outpost line on a part of the front where the position was obscure. This man's section was on the flank of the screen and on reaching the sugar factory on the Serre Road they came in contact with the enemy. The Corporal in command of the section was sniped at and hit, his leg being broken. Rifleman Wake with another man immediately went to his assistance, bandaged his wound, and attempted too carry him out of danger on an oil-sheet.' They got him as far as a trench in force. In turns they jumped quickly out and into a shell hole, taking the Corporal with them. Here they remained on guard until night-fall when they obtained assistance and took the Corporal to the Aid Post. Throughout they were under heavy fire, the Corporal being again wounded twice in the arm. The great resource and coolness displayed, together with the entire contempt of danger shown by Rifleman Wake, were an inspiration to those who witnessed this commendable exploit.
