Military Medal 'For gallant conduct and devotion to duty in operations east of Ypres, 4/5th October 1917. This soldier was one of a carrying party to follow up the company to its objective. He reached the objective with his party a few minutes after the position was taken. All through the day and night of the 4th and 5th he carried water, rations, etc, working throughout under heavy shell fire. Although exhausted, he showed an example of cheerful and smiling devotion to duty, under especially trying circumstances.'
