Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as battalion signalling sergeant in an attack. His commanding officer was killed during the attack, and he went forward three times to find another officer to take command of the battalion, but in each case the officer for whom he was searching was wounded. He returned and established his communications, and finally found an officer to take command. Throughout the whole time he was exposed to the heaviest machine gun fire, and his cheerfulness and disregard of danger was a splendid example to all ranks.'

attention to duty that communication was able to be kept up so well in spite of the bombardment.'
