'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations that took place near Ruyaulcourt on the 4th September 1918, the enemy machine gun fire became so intense that further progress was retarded. Private Verity worked forward and picked up a Lewis gun and ammunition, all the while under heavy fire. He did good work in bringing this gun into action during an awkward period, saving many from becoming casualties. Subsequently on taking up our front line position, he, single handed captured 17 of the enemy from their trench. He showed a fine example of command in taking up an outpost position when the majority of NCOs had become wounded. He displayed a fine leadership and inspired his men with confidence.'
