Joined 6 Company, 3rd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 14 August 1917.

Detached to 4th Light Trench Mortar Detachment, 29 September 1917; rejoined unit, 8 October 1917.

Wounded in action, 20 November 1917, and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to No 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 21 November 1917 (gun shot wound, back); to No 54 General Hospital, 23 November 1917; to England and admitted to Military Hospital, Endell Street London, 30 November 1917.

Transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 14 January 1918; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 5 March 1918; admitted to NZ Convalescent Home, Hornchurch, 30 March 1918; admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 3 July 1918.

Discharged on leave, 29 December 1918; marched into NZ Command Depot, Codford, 7 January 1919.

Medically graded by B1 by Medical Board due to influenza contract in November 1918, NZ Command Depot, Codford, 9 January 1919.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Glasgow on board SS 'Bhamo', 10 March 1919; admitted to ship's hospital, at sea, 28 March 1919; discharged from ship's hospital, at sea, 14 March 1919; treated as a out-patient at Auckland Hospital from 3 May 1919; discharged (no longer fit for War Service on account of illness contract on active service), 6 February 1920.
