'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the 15th North Auckland Company's raid on the enemy on the evening of July 31. His section did excellent and conspicuous work. Under the utmost trying conditions he held his section well together and put up a sterling fight. Although wounded up the back he hung on until his platoon was ordered by his officer to retire. For action at Western outskirts of Warneton.'
