'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the advanced section of the battery was subjected to heavy shelling, he superintended the withdrawal of the men from the position, and then remained himself by the ammunition, although in imminent danger of being blown up. With some assistance he managed to extinguish a fire which would have destroyed all the ammunition in the pit.'
