Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 12th October 1917, during the attack on the Belle Vue Spur, this man showed great gallantry and bravery. His company was assaulting two concrete positions, and by working round to a flank and constantly sniping, although subject to galling machine-gun fire, he forced the enemy to take cover. By thus disregarding his own safety, this soldier greatly assisted in the taking of these places, and in saving the lives of many of his comrades. His conduct during the whole of this operation was an inspiration to others.'
