Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field. On the 29th August 1918 during the advance across the Bapaume/Peronne Road, Southeast of Bapaume this NCO showed exceptional daring and initiative in leading his men. He advanced with great skill and courage in the face of heavy machine gun fire. During the consolidation of the position he showed himself possessed of the qualities of coolness and determination. Although the place was heavily shelled and was subjected to galling machine gun fire Sgt Turley went forward by himself and selected the positions for the Company Lewis guns. During the posting of these
guns numerous casualties were caused in the gun teams, and it was largely due to Sgt Turley's steadiness that the positions were successfully established. During the night of the 29th/30th August this NCO's work was of the greatest value to his Company Commander. During an anxious period he personally kept in touch with the forward posts. During the remainder of the night he worked indefatigably on the consolidation under the most trying conditions. His patience, courage and
determination during the whole operation were of the greatest value to his Company.'
