| Miscellaneous information from cemetery records | "We have heard with regret of the death, at Sling Camp from spinal meningitis of Lady Waterlow's only son Private Bernard P. Tuppen 60232 A Company 30th reinforcements 4th Auckland Battalion, aged 26 years. He went to NZ six years ago, where he went on the land, working on various stations. Latterly he was working with C.R. Wood, Mataranu, Cape Runaway, East Coast. And before that at Oakleigh, Pakwhai, Hastings. He was twice turned down for medical reasons from joining the NZEF, but through his determination he succeeded on finally getting away with the 30th reinforcements. He arrived in England on the 7 December and died a week later. Lady Waterlow received news of his serious condition too late to enable her to reach the hospital before he died;and so she would be deeply grateful if any of his mates in the Reinforcements, or friends of his working days in NZ, who might see this notice, would write and tell her all they could of him and his life" (Chronicles of the N.Z.E.F., 30 January 1918, p. 287) |
