Military Medal 'East of Ypres on the 4th October 1917 this soldier displayed the greatest gallantry and devotion to duty while acting as carrier of ammunition and water. During the advance when ammunition and water were urgently required in the front line, his party were shelled and became disorganised. In the midst of a barrage fire he collected his party again and took charge of it and it was owing to his great bravery
and devotion to duty that ammunition and water were carried up to the front line. His courage and devotion to duty under very trying circumstances were a fine example to his comrades.'
