Mentioned in Despatches

'Operations Messines ? 7th to 12th June 1917, and Operations opposite Warneton 14th to 19th June 1917. For gallantry and devotion to duty. As Adjutant of his Battalion this Officer displayed the greatest courage and devotion to duty under heavy shell fire throughout the above period. He was continually moving about among his men encouraging them and setting them a great example of gallantry and coolness. He was of the greatest help to his Commanding Officer at the Battalion Headquarters, which was established in a shell hole, and all work had to be done under heavy shell fire, but in spite of it the Brigade was always kept constantly informed of the progress of events.'

Military Cross

'For conspicuous and meritorious conduct as Adjutant of the 1st Battalion Otago Regiment during the time the Battalion has been in France, viz from 13th April to date. Lieut Tracey has at all times and particularly when the unit has been in action, carried out his duties punctiliously and successfully with a total disregard of personal danger, and in action his work as regards situation and other reports has been most useful. His work in this respect has been of great assistance to me as his O.C., and I would submit his name as that of an officer well deserving reward.'
