Military Medal 'During the operations on the 1st New Zealand Infantry Bde of the 16/18th and 24/26th September 1916, this man acted as a runner. On the 16th an advanced Brigade Headquarters was established in a shell hole near Switch Trench, Battalion
Headquarters then being in an around Flers. An urgent despatch came for battalions from Brigade Headquarters and this man was despatched with it. To deliver it he had to walk through a very heavy barrage between the advanced Brigade Headquarters and Battalion Headquarters, and he delivered the message safely. His work throughout the whole operations was exceedingly good and was carried out under continuous exposure to shell fire.'
