Meritorious Service Medal 'For gallant conduct and devotion to duty in operations east of Ypres on 4/5th October 1917. He was in charge of carrying party and worked his way through heavy fire many times to the front line, keeping his Company supplied with rations and
water under circumstances which called for great determination. By his coolness and courage he kept his party together, and set a soldierly example to his men. He has always proved himself a brave and efficient soldier and has inspired the confidence of his Officers and comrades.'
