Military Medal 'Operations opposite Polderhoek 27th November to 5th December 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 3rd December 1917, about midday, during the attack on the Chateau, this NCO was in command of a section of the attacking troops; soon after the attack commenced his Platoon Commander became a casualty, and this NCO immediately assumed command of the Platoon and led it forward under heavy hostile rifle and machine gun fire, showing great coolness and brilliant leadership. He continuously sent in valuable situation reports to his Company Commander. His splendid behaviour throughout the whole
